BLOCK PRINTING

BLOCK PRINTING

Block printing is an ancient textile art in which designs are hand printed on fabric with finely carved wooden blocks. Weaving, dyeing, printing and carving of the wooden blocks are all highly specialized professions. Indian printed textiles have been treasured throughout the world since early medieval times. Rajasthan prints are distinctive, with each design usually requiring several blocks. Classic floral, animal and geometric designs remain popular, but are now often enhanced by creative adaptation.

TIE & DYE (Bandhani)

Tie and Dye (Bandhani) is a form of resist dyeing, in which the patterns are created by tying off portions of the fabric - often very tiny -with thread, before immersing in successive dye colours. The tied portions do not absorb the colours, thus providing the pattern. Bandhni fabrics have been known in India for several thousand years, and are the world's oldest surviving tie and dye tradition. Tie and Dye requires a high level of skill and precision. The way in which the fabric is folded or rolled, the way in which the threads are tied, and the numbers of dye colors result in a wide variety of stunning patterns, with squares, circles, diamonds, or waves of colour.
